Dark carnival make-up images

Once again I was using the male shoot that I did first as an inspiration. I have also pulled from paganism and obviously carnivals. I used the same ideas as I used when shooting the model with white paint however, by using black paint I was trying to draw upon the dark side. Black is the darkest colour possible which is why I chose it. It is literally the complete opposite of white meaning a complete absence of light.  What black hides white uncovers. The colour black represents the hidden, the unknown and therefore can be thought of as a mystery. Black can hide who you are much like a carnival can, you are free. When you are in a carnival you can literally be whoever you want to be, that means you can choose. In a way you can choose light or dark. This is the representation of the white and black paint on the models. I wanted to show the two sides without being completely obvious.

I am really happy with my final images and feel that they flow together more with the rest of my work now. I think my strongest image from the shoot is the close up of the eye mainly because it is so close it feels asif the model is popping out of the picture to come into reality.

My interim deadline.

Interim deadlineAs part of my assessment I had to produce a contact sheet of 8 images. The contact sheet you see above is the one that I decided to use for my interim deadline. The feedback that I received from this was that although the ideas of the flowers is good there is no link between the carnival and the flowers. I need to research in more depth into the history of the carnivals and the meanings behind them and I also need to look into the history of flowers. One of the ways that I could link the two together would be to use the idea of the carnival being a place of freedom. Somewhere that people can be anonymous and represent a different persona. I would like to use this idea of freedom when looking at the flowers and find a flower that represents this freedom.

Initial Response to task

When we were given this brief my initial response was to produce an underwater shoot transforming the paper cups into ‘floating rubbish’ that represent sea animals however, with only 2 days to shoot, edit and print I did not feel that I would have enough time to make good enough animals for a successful shoot. Instead I think that I will use this idea to further this short task. After deciding that I did not have time to produce my initial idea I knew I had to think of something that would still be interesting but wouldn’t take as long. I knew that I still wanted to use bright colours and potentially use water in the images this led me to thinking about mixing paints and water and freezing this down in the paper cups provided. My idea to photograph the cup is that I am photographing the mould of the cup.

My work in progress…before the mixtures had frozen.

My Contact sheetcontact

When I was photographing I just went with what I felt could potentially look good. I used poster paints, oil paints, ink, water, nail varnish and some petals from flowers. I tried to create something that would look visually appealing once it had frozen.
